Topic 4: Social Forces and Student Learning

Dr. Cromley’s presentation helps me to refine some of the practices I am already using for my classes. I will be adding the drawing representing a concept.  There has been a great talk about focusing on the students’ strengths across the workshop and in my experience, students find it difficult to identify some of them. I am planning to ask my students to draw or to create a collage that represents their strengths.  This will be added to their “personal profile” the students do in my classes.   For this same personal profile, I will be adding a prompt/s where the students will write about their ethic background, particularly what makes them proud of it, noticing some of the strengths they see in their background.

For the family genogram activity in my Lifespan class, I was able with my current class, to asked them to write about what are some of the strengths they have, who in their family have these same strengths, what are the family stories around it, what are the sayings around this topic etc.  This genogram activity can serve as a preamble to Purpose and relevance in general for the class as a way to think on the class material and for some of the assignments that I am planning to make modifications.

This later goes in connection to what Dr. Destin’s presentation has inspired me to think deeper in how to refine the assignment about intersectionality.  I can create a micro-lecture and add it on blackboard to help the students describe themselves thinking about their intersectionality and have them find in what way this information is helpful for them to know as individuals and as members of their community.
