Topic 4 Reflection

The lecture on cognitive learning strategies was interesting and thought provoking. I got some new ideas on how to facilitate learning, encourage the students to take notes, read over them and organize them. I enjoyed Dr. Cromley’s idea about telling the students that it’s okay to have gaps in their knowledge and it’s okay if they juggle multiple responsibilities and are not as prepared as they should be at times as a result. It may me think of a concept in psychotrauma literature called “identification with the aggressor.” Students with a history of being marginalized may have been trained to believe that it’s not okay and they have to perform no matter what, so this attitude could be very helpful to students like that. I also liked Kelly’s comment in the chat, in which she wrote something along the lines of that she brings her whole self into the classroom, and Sangeeta subsequently saying that she found it helpful talking to students about her own identity. I sometimes struggle with that, so these comments were encouraging.
