Reflection #1

The lectures, readings, activities and discussion centered on Belongingness and Social Skills made me realize how the way I have been trying to build this in my classes is largely through informal means and that I need to be much more intentional about how I go about this. I liked Jessica’s suggestions, and would like to include the growth mindset activity. I also plan to introduce a formal, graded group project, and reduce the proportion of the final grade accounted for by the written paper. I appreciated hearing ideas for how to limit some of the difficulties encountered in group work, and I think I will take on board the suggestion that the group select a leader. In addition to these ideas, I intend to bring forward some skills-based activities so they take place earlier rather than later in the semester. For example, I think it would be useful to use up one class at the beginning of the semester to teach students skills such as time management, prioritizing etc. I also like the idea of the scavenger hunt. Although at face value this may seem most helpful for freshman, there are likely many senior, undergraduate students who have not used the writing center or AccessAbility, so knowing where to find these services will be helpful.
